Passwordless authentication is currently in public preview now over at Microsoft Azure with the Microsoft Authenticator app. The holy grail of high security and convenience is passwordless authentication. Still, the password is always the first factor. As people still work from home, IT still needs to manage security. It's gotten better with two-factor authentication, and the fact that systems are always getting smarter about when 2FA is necessary, such as when a device is on a new network or when it's a new device. It's a broken system, and one that's been in place for as long as we've had accounts for anything. The Redmond firm says that a third of people would rather stop using an account entirely instead of resetting their password. Or, they make a password that they end up forgetting, and that doesn't help. People will name their passwords after a pet or a relative, which is insecure to start with. You can use Microsoft Authenticator, Windows Hello, a security key, or a verification code to sign into your MSA.
